Microsoft SharePoint

Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services
Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) comes free with Windows Server 2003. WSS is an integrated portfolio of collaboration and communication services designed to connect people, information, processes and systems.

Instead of storing files into directories, WSS supplies Web sites with document storage and retrieval that allow users to find and share information with the added assurance that data will not be lost.

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS)

MOSS integrates with WSS and adds more functionality to it, including better document management, indexed search functionality, navigation features, RSS support, and blogs, as well as features from Microsoft Content Management Server. It also includes features for business data analysis as well as integration with Microsoft Office applications, such as project management capabilities or exposing Microsoft Office InfoPath forms via a browser. It can also host specific libraries, such as PowerPoint Template Libraries provided the server components of the specific application are installed. MOSS was previously known as SharePoint Server and SharePoint Portal Server

Why use SharePoint?

MOSS is a secure, scalable, enterprise portal server built upon Windows SharePoint Services. It allows users to create, manage, and build their own collective intranet or web sites throughout the organisation. Sharing information with partners, co-workers and customers is made easy with functions such as navigation, search, application integration and personalisation.

Integration with 2007 Microsoft Office System

Office SharePoint Server 2007 is designed to work effectively with other programs, servers, and technologies in the 2007 Office release. For example, with Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007, you can create a slide library on an Office SharePoint Server 2007 site that allows other users to pick specific slides for their own presentation and receive notifications and updated versions when the slides have been modified.

Microsoft SharePoint Products and Technologies

SharePoint Products and Technologies provide enterprise-scale capabilities to meet business-critical needs like managing content and business processes, simplifying how people find and share information across boundaries, and enabling better informed decisions. Using the combined collaboration features of Windows SharePoint Services and Office SharePoint Server 2007, plus the design and customisation capabilities of Office SharePoint Designer 2007, organizations can enable their users to create, manage, and easily build their own SharePoint sites, and enable these sites to be discovered throughout the organization.

Flexibility

With SharePoint Portal Server employees create online workspaces on-the-fly using a ready made library of 'web-parts' including: discussion forums, document libraries, task lists, attendee invitations and more.

Find documents and information easily

Is your shared drive full of outdated information? Is it organised differently according to department? SharePoint allows content to be tagged so it can appear in multiple locations and accessed by audience profile. To encourage collaboration across departments, content can be accessed via team or project. Discover the new way of communicating and collaborating with SharePoint.
